Puppies, manatees and other animals predict Super Bowl outcome

The New England Patriots will face off against the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LIII on Sunday, and animals across the nation have been asked to predict the winner. They certainly don’t see eye-to-eye.

At the prompting of their keepers, the critters are typically asked to pick a logo — Sometimes there’s food in it for them.

Here’s some of the predictions from around the nation:

Last year the Cincinnati Zoo’s celebrity hippo correctly predicted that the Philadelphia Eagles would win the Super Bowl. More than 2 million people watched that bold prediction — the Eagles were considered the underdog in 2018.

When the show asked puppies to predict the winner of the Super Bowl last year, the pups also (incorrectly) picked the Patriots by crowding around a bowl full of kibbles marked with the Patriots’ logo.

When Fresno Chaffee Zoo’s African lioness Kiki was presented with two boxes, each with a “special meat treat,” she ran right for the box with the Rams’ logo.

“Kiki predicted the Los Angeles Rams will win the Super Bowl. She did not hesitate and went straight to the box with their logo, showing no interest in the Patriots,” zoo spokesperson Brandy Gamonig said.

Chaffee Zoo lions have successfully predicted each Super Bowl winner since the annual tradition began in 2016 as part of the zoo’s animal enrichment program.

For the 12th year in a row, Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium’s manatees, brothers Hugh and Buffett, predicted the winner for the Super Bowl.

Hugh chose the Los Angeles Rams while Buffett picked the New England Patriots.

But Buffett is known by his keepers to have the better record with his predictions: “We joke that Buffett is more of a football fan,” Stephanie Kettle, Mote’s public relations manager, said. “He’s got a 9-2 record, so he knows what he’s doing.”
