SportsPulse: The madness is finally here. USA TODAY’s Trysta Krick breaks down everything you need to know about this year’s tournament.
The Sun Belt Conference is set to announce Keith Gill as its new commissioner on Tuesday, making him the first-ever African-American to lead a Football Bowl Subdivision conference, two people with knowledge of the situation told USA TODAY Sports.
The people spoke on the condition of anonymity because the league hadn’t officially announced the hire. The Sun Belt sent notification to the media Monday night about a Tuesday announcement and news conference.
The FBS is the highest level of college football among Division I schools. It is – with the exception of a few independents – made up of 10 conferences, one of those being the Sun Belt, which was comprised of 10 schools this past football season.
On the basketball side, the Sun Belt saw 12 schools participate in both men’s and women’s hoops this season.
Gill, a former Duke football player, has been the executive associate commissioner of the Atlantic 10 since 2017. Previously, he was athletics director at Richmond and American University.
Gill will replace Karl Benson, who led the Sun Belt since 2012 and announced his retirement last August.
